Primary Purpose:
The Grounds Shop Mechanic is responsible for maintaining the operational efficiency of all the ground equipment and golf carts. This position is responsible for performing regular maintenance, diagnosing mechanical issues, and implementing repairs to ensure that all machinery is in optimal working condition. This position requires a keen eye for detail, strong critical thinking skills, and a thorough understanding of various mechanical systems.
Essential Functions:
- Repair mowers, vehicles, electric carts, forklifts, backhoes, man lifts, scissor lifts, and other related small engine grounds equipment including blowers, weed eaters, edgers, chainsaws, spray equipment, etc.
- Operate the same, order repairs parts, supplies, and new equipment.
- Perform routine inspections to identify potential issues before they escalate.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs performed.
- Maintain and manage vehicle fleet records i.e., registration, smog, maintenance certifications, etc.
- Ensure all equipment meets safety standards and regulations.
- Collaborate with the grounds team to schedule maintenance without disruption.
- Train and guide staff members on proper equipment use and maintenance.
- Troubleshoot electrical systems in golf carts and other equipment.
- Keep the workshop clean, organized, and safe for all personnel.
- Assist in managing the department when the Supervisor is not present.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Five (5) years of experience as a mechanic.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Technical college diploma and or ASE Certification preferred.
- Possess a thorough knowledge of the industry codes.
- Ability to read and write at an appropriate level and possess good verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to operate hand and power tools and necessary test equipment.
- Be proficient with computers and diagnostic equipment. Must be able to use computer programs related to the industry and for training purposes.
- Able to work with minimum supervision, follows written and verbal instructions and practice safe work habits.
- Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
- Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.
Physical Requirements:

Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time. Constant walking. Frequent bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. Reaching above shoulders or use of hands in gripping motion. Work performed both indoors and outdoors, at times in confined areas and in hot and cold environments. Must be able to climb ladders and work at heights, on scaffolds, lifts, and other above ground locations such as roofs. Must be able to lift/carry up to 70 pounds, must be able to push/pull force up to 70 pounds. Worked performed in a variety of environments, both in and out of doors. Exposure to hot and cold temperatures.
Union membership required.
Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work performed during standard business hours requires the ability to respond to after-hour issues, emergencies and/or repairs. Overtime on occasion. Travel on occasion.
Valid drivers license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University's fleet rules and be eligible to drive the University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
Hiring Range: $38.58 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
