Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for an Accountant, Project Accountant, or Senior Project Accountant for the Facilities Services Department (FSD). The Accountant and Project Accountant provide accounting services for one or more specified programs and additionally the Project Accountant provides services for assigned mid-level capital projects. The Senior Project Accountant is the lead for construction project accounting and other assigned specialty functions and provides accounting services for large complex capital projects.

Accountant responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Accurately maintain a specialized sub-ledger or accounting system to ensure accurate budgeting, recording and tracking of all revenue, purchases, and payments for assigned program(s);
  • Maintain a system to detect, investigate, correct, and report any potential anomalies or errors;
  • Collaborate with Facilities Services personnel and campus departments as needed regarding program funding, accuracy of budgets and transactions, and changes in policies and procedures;
  • Responsible for the review and reconciliation of assigned accounts to ensure subsidiary ledgers;
  • Prepare journal vouchers and budget amendments as needed;
  • Provide updates and consultation on the status of funds, restrictions, methods of payment, budget limitations and shortfalls for assigned specialized program;
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable state, university, and accounting rules, regulations, policies and procedures;
  • Create and maintain data analytics to provide trending, estimating and projection records;
  • Review data and analyzes trends, estimates, and projections to identify significant changes; report significant changes and recommend updates to rates and/or budgets to the program owners;
  • Conduct planning meetings with program owners and users to update annual budgets, recharge rates, and financial statements;
  • Accurately prepare annual budget, recharge rates and financial statements for each program account, as needed;
  • Use specialized software (e-Builder, TMA, Excel, Access, Power BI and others) to extract information and prepare specialized reports;
  • Assist in creating process improvements and updating department policies and procedures; and
  • Other duties as assigned.


Project Accountant responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • All Accountant responsibilities listed above; and
  • Maintain the project accounting for assigned capital construction projects;
  • Accurately process commitment requests submitted by project managers ensuring adequate funding and account budget exists;
  • Ensure commitments which are subject to retainage are properly identified and retainage is calculated and properly withheld in accordance with NRS regulations; coordinate with classified staff completing retainage tasks;
  • Prepare specialized retainage interest calculations and project funding and expenditure reports; and
  • Other duties as assigned.


Senior Project Accountant responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • All Accountant and Project Accountant responsibilities listed above; and
  • Act as lead and is responsible for the development and achievement goals for the Construction Project Accounting Program;
  • Accurately maintain project account for assigned large capital construction projects;
  • Assess key areas to determine needs; create initiatives, implement process improvements, and stays apprised of related laws and regulations affecting the program;
  • Responsible for prioritizing and assigning tasks associated with the program, then monitoring the completion of tasks and reviewing for accuracy and completion;
  • Ensure Project Accountants and staff are adequately trained in eBuilder and project accounting processes; assign accounting ally to all construction projects via eBuilder workflow;
  • Maintain communication with program users regarding program changes, processes, status, and results;
  • Responsible for the review and reconciliation of assigned accounts;
  • Provide high-level consultation concerning complaints, complex problems and proper procedures;
  • Supervise Classified Staff and student employees; hire, train, evaluate, and assign work to assigned staff;
  • Identify skills and professional development opportunities for assigned staff; encourage staff participation;
  • Provide quarterly drawdown reports for Controller's office;
  • Provide annual summary of project account spending; and
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications
Accountant/Project Accountant

Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of related work experience; OR

Master's Degree and one (1) year of related work experience

Related Experience: In general accounting, project accounting, cost accounting, and/or utility accounting.

A valid Class "C" driver's license or higher operator's license is required within 30 days of appointment.

Senior Project Accountant

Bachelor's Degree and three (3) years of related work experience; OR

Master's Degree and two (2) years of related work experience

Related Experience: In general accounting, project accounting, cost accounting, and/or utility accounting.

A valid Class "C" driver's license or higher operator's license is required within 30 days of appointment.

Physical Demands
This position requires walking or standing for brief periods of time; exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess: strong organizational and multitasking skills including the ability to manage and meet multiple deadlines; ability to work independently and as part of a team; possess an excellent attention to detail; intermediate to advanced Excel skills including the ability to create spreadsheets which include formulas and pivot tables; excellent verbal and written skills, intermediate knowledge of accounting, forecasting, budgeting, cost accounting principles and processes including AR, AP and account reconciliation; ability to understand and interpret formalized policies, guidelines, rules and regulations; ability to gain an understanding of complex issues and analyze complex data; explain complex processes and procedures; and write reports, business correspondence and procedures; knowledge of higher education accounting and business procedures; fund accounting and budgeting concepts; and financial and accounting internal control standards.

Schedule and Travel Requirements

The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs. This position may have the ability to elect an alternative work schedule.

This position is subject to occasional travel.

This position is designated as Essential Personnel. In the event of a campus emergency, special event, closure to maintain campus safety or building operations, this position may be required to work outside of regularly scheduled hours.
