Building and Structures Supervisor - Planning and Facilities Management

The Building and Structures Supervisor performs supervisory facilities maintenance work in directing the operations and services of a central shop responsible for providing campus-wide building and structural maintenance services. Their services consist of carpentry, mason and brick repair, painting, roofing and sheet metal, and related building and structural services. The incumbent plans, schedules, and directs activities to include planning and estimating jobs, determining repair methods and procedures, and inspecting work for acceptance. Reporting to the Director of Maintenance Services and directly supervising approximately 12 building and structures staff, additional duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Supervise skilled trades workers and support personnel providing carpentry, locksmith, masonry, painting, roofing and sheet metal and related services to maintain and repair University buildings.
  • Plan and schedule work orders from the Work Management Center (WMC) in response to requests for service, inspections, and department management actions, scheduling and/or directing nonroutine and emergency repairs.
  • Assign work orders to appropriate staff based on the nature of requested work, accompanying workers to worksites and, as deems necessary, instruct them in work procedures, methods, materials, tools and equipment to be used.
  • Inspect work in progress and upon completion, depending on size and nature of project, and as appropriate and necessary, direct staff in correcting, modifying, adding to, and performing other necessary tasks to ensure that work orders are properly completed.
  • Advise management on alternatives regarding building and structurally related problems, conferring with building users regarding their request and discussing/explaining requests and problems with such users to facilitate appropriate and cost-effective decisions.
  • Refer costly or nonroutine requests to department management for action, participating in final inspections of contracted work to ensure that completed work meets requirements and is acceptable.
  • Schedule and/or review and approve schedules of staff to ensure effective services, reviewing training needs of staff and making appropriate arrangements for training.
  • Participate in selecting new employees, evaluating employee performance and taking appropriate steps to correct inadequate performance.
  • Initiate and maintain forms and records required to provide services, reviewing completed work order requests to ensure actions are properly entered.
  • Keep informed of departmental and University rules, regulations, and guides pertaining to employment obligations, conflict of interest, or ethical behavior, complying with attendance, reporting to work, and dress requirements.


Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering or a related technical discipline
  • Five-seven years of progressively responsible facilities management/construction activities experience that involved responsibility for building structures, and included at least two years of supervisory experience

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$54,616.00 - $100,493.33

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
